The mining, processing and masonry of the arch stone are not easy to be mechanized. It requires a large number of labor force and a long construction period, which limits its development to a certain extent.
The main bearing structure of stone arch bridge is arch ring. The arch structure with stone side wall and filling between the walls is called solid web arch bridge; The hollow arch bridge is built on the arch ring. The arch ring is generally constructed with arch stone on the arch frame with large rigidity. There are also SLATE blocks or curved SLATE instead of arch stone. The masonry face in the arch ring should be perpendicular to the arc of the arch ring, and the adjacent two rows of arch stones should have staggered joints. For stone arch Bridges with a span of more than 10 meters, the arch ring shall be constructed symmetrically by segmenting method. The position of sections and the order of masonry shall be such that the stress of the arch is balanced and the deformation is minimized. The stone arch bridge with large span can be built in layers because of its thick arch ring. First build the bottom layer, until its closure and arch joint bearing, then build the upper layer. Each floor can be constructed by a combination of sections and reserved void joints.
